Overnight layover guide. Sleeping facilities in the public zone or boarding area
Amsterdam Airport is one of the busiest connecting hubs in Europe. Due to its high volume of intercontinental flights, it is very common to see passengers spending the night in the terminal. In general, Schiphol is considered one of the most comfortable airports for sleeping ("sleep-friendly") if you are in the transit area (Airside), but the experience is very different in the public zone.
Where to Rest
Transit Area (After security):
- Airport Park (Near Gate D): This is travellers’ favourite spot. It is a recreational zone designed to imitate a green park, with loungers, beanbags (although they are sometimes removed), and reclining seats. It is a quiet area, although the lighting may remain constant.
- Holland Boulevard (Between piers E and F): A cultural and relaxing area where the library and museum are located. It features comfortable sofas and cushioned seats, ideal for resting in a quieter atmosphere.
- Internet Lounge: Located near the entrance to Pier C. It has comfortable chairs and workstations.
- Rest areas: On the upper level of Departures Lounge 3, near the entrance to Pier F, long benches and quieter spots are often available.
Public Area (Before security):
- Schiphol Plaza: Options are limited. Most seats are metal, cold, and equipped with armrests. In addition, security is strict: you will likely be asked for your boarding pass and passport during the night to be allowed to stay. Passengers sleeping here are often grouped into a specific section for easier control.
Safety and Recommendations
The airport operates 24 hours a day, but noise from cleaning machines and announcements can be disturbing. It is advisable to bring earplugs and a sleep mask. Temperatures also tend to drop considerably at night, so warm clothing or a travel blanket is essential.
Toilets and Showers
If you wish to freshen up, there are paid and free options:
- Mercure Hotel (Lounge 3): Offers shower services for non-guests (subject to a fee).
- EF Zone: Accessible through Lounge 2 or Holland Boulevard.
Night-time Food Options
Most restaurants close around 9:00 pm or 10:00 pm. However, you will always find basic options open 24 hours a day (such as Burger King at Schiphol Plaza or “Grab & Go” outlets in the airside area) and vending machines with drinks and snacks.
Luggage and Wi-Fi
- Luggage: If you have a long layover and want to move freely, use the lockers in the transit area or the left-luggage office in the basement (public zone).
- Wi-Fi: Free in 4-hour sessions. Once the session ends, you can reconnect immediately.
Booking accommodation
Hotels
At Schiphol Airport, it is essential to distinguish between hotels located in the transit area (after security, only for passengers with a boarding pass and without leaving the airport) and hotels in the public area (before security, accessible to everyone).
Hotels in the Transit Area (Airside)
Ideal for long layovers where you do not want to go through immigration. Only accessible with a passport and a valid boarding pass for the same day or the following day. You cannot access your checked luggage.
- Mercure Hotel Schiphol Terminal: Located in Departure Lounge 3, on the upper level, opposite the KLM Crown Lounge area. It offers full rooms with private bathrooms.
- YOTELAIR Amsterdam Schiphol: Situated in Departure Lounge 2, near Pier D. It offers compact Japanese-style cabins, ideal for resting for a few hours or taking a shower.
Hotels Connected to the Terminal (Landside)
Located just a few minutes’ walk from Schiphol Plaza. You do not need a boarding pass to stay here.
- Sheraton Amsterdam Airport: The closest one. It has direct and immediate access from Schiphol Plaza without going outside.
- Hilton Amsterdam Airport: Directly connected to the main terminal via a covered walkway (The Traverse). Known for its iconic architecture.
- citizenM Schiphol: A modern design hotel located about a 5-minute walk from the terminal, exiting the plaza to the outside.
