Buses

The airport offers urban and intercity bus services that connect it with Catania city centre and various towns across Sicily. The bus stop is located in front of the arrivals area.

Alibus

The Alibus service operated by AMTS provides a direct connection between the airport, Catania’s railway station (Stazione Centrale) and the city centre.

  • Frequency: Every 25 minutes.
  • Timetable: From 4:40 am to 12:30 am.
  • Cost: €4.00. Tickets can be purchased on board or from vending machines.
  • Journey time: Approximately 20 minutes to Catania city centre.
  • Main stops: Faro Biscari, Piazza dei Martiri, Stazione Centrale, Corso Sicilia, Piazza Stesicoro, Via Etnea, Piazza Trento, Via Porticello, among others.

Regional Connections (Intercity Buses)

Several companies offer routes to different towns and cities across Sicily, making it easy to reach the entire island. Tickets can be bought on board or at the ticket offices of the respective companies.

  • AST (Azienda Siciliana Trasporti): Connections to destinations such as Avola, Caltagirone, Carlentini, Grammichele, Ispica, Lentini, Mazzarrone, Mirabella Imbaccari, Modica, Noto, Palagonia, Piazza Armerina, Pozzallo, Rosolini, San Michele di Ganzaria, Scicli, Sigonella.
  • Circumetnea: Serves routes to Adrano, Misterbianco, Paternó, Randazzo, Linguaglossa, Fiumefreddo.
  • Etna Trasporti: Connects with Aidone, Fiumefreddo, Gela, Giardini Naxos, Recanati, Licata, Piazza Armerina, Ragusa, Marina di Ragusa, Santa Croce Camerina, Taormina, Valguarnera, Vizzini.
  • Interbus: Routes to Agira, Avola, Catenanuova, Leonforte, Nicosia, Nissoria, Noto, Pachino, Portopalo, Priolo, Regalbuto, Syracuse.
  • SAIS Trasporti: Connections to Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Canicattì.

Trains

The airport has its own railway station, Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa, which connects directly with the national rail network operated by Trenitalia. This station is part of the Messina–Siracusa line.

From the airport station, you can reach Catania’s central station and other cities in Sicily without needing an intermediate shuttle service, making travel quicker and more convenient.

Connection to the Terminals: The station is located 600 metres from Terminal A’s Arrivals area and is accessible on foot via a covered pedestrian path. You can also reach it by taking the AMTS Alibus, at a cost of €1.00.

Taxis

Taxi ranks are located just outside the arrivals level. The vehicles are white, marked with a “TAXI” sign on the roof and licence numbers on the doors and rear.

  • Main companies: It is recommended to use official Radiotaxi vehicles to ensure regulated fares and safety.
  • Travel time to Catania city centre: Approximately 10–15 minutes, depending on traffic.
  • Fares: It is advisable to ask the driver for an estimated fare before starting your journey or check whether they use a taximeter.

Transportation Tips to/from the airport

Although there are issues that seem more than obvious, it is always advisable to take them into account when moving to or from the airport, and especially if we go by public transport.
 
 1- To the airport - It is convenient to leave with a little more anticipation than what is commonly suggested. If you choose a taxi or a private car service, always take into account peak traffic times, demonstrations, strikes or events that may delay the journey to the airport from where you are. It is always good to be informed about what is happening.
 
If you contract a shared transfer service, have a contact telephone number handy in case of any delay by the company. In these cases they usually already have a scheduled collection time.
 
If you use public transport (collective, train) take into account the schedules (weekends and holidays tend to have less frequency), if you have to change and also how to board (if you need a card or paying the driver or motorist at the moment ). These are details that seem obvious, but it is advisable to know so as not to have surprises and suffer a delay that could cause complications.
 
If you rent a car to get to the airport, check where to leave the vehicle. At some airports, there is an exclusive parking lot for rental cars.
 
 2 -From the airport- Here it is a little less stressful since you don't have the pressure of missing your flight. In the worst case, you will arrive later at the place where you are going to stay or at the meeting point where you are trying to arrive.
 
Once you leave the plane, look for your suitcase and finish with the arrival procedures that are required. Then, follow the directions for public transportation or ask the airport staff.
 
It is very useful to find out in advance the schedules of the buses or trains in case you arrive late at night. Not all work 24 hours. The same goes for taxis. In case of using an Uber-type service, have the mobile application handy to contact the driver.
 
On the other hand, if you booked a private transport service, it is likely that they will have a person waiting for you, identified with a sign. If you rent a car to go from the airport to your final destination, for greater peace of mind it is advisable to book it in advance. Rental counters are usually available in the arrivals hall.
