Sleeping inside or in nearby hotels (FNC)
Possibility to spend the night at Madeira airport (FNC), if open 24 hours. Services available, places to rest (free resting zones), or look for the list of nearby hotels and vip lounges.
Overnight layover guide. Sleeping facilities in the public zone or boarding area
Madeira Airport operates 24 hours a day, allowing passengers to stay overnight in the terminal if they have an early morning flight or face unexpected delays. Although it is a safe facility, the level of comfort for sleeping is limited.
Rest areas
Most of the seating available in the terminal is made of metal and fitted with armrests, which makes resting in a horizontal position difficult. Nevertheless, there are some alternatives:
- Level 0 (Arrivals): This is the area most recommended by travellers. Near the tourist office and the arrivals exit, it is possible to find some benches without dividers and areas with lower foot traffic during the early morning hours.
- Level 1 (Departures): The public area before the security checkpoint is spacious, but the floors are tiled and tend to be cold. Bringing a blanket or sleeping bag is advisable if you plan to rest on the floor.
- VIP Lounges: The ANA Lounge (Level 3) offers a higher level of comfort, but it closes overnight, so it is not an option for spending the entire night.
Food and supplies
You should be aware that there are no restaurants or cafés operating 24 hours a day. Retail outlets usually close after the last scheduled flight. As an alternative, snack and drink vending machines are available on both levels of the terminal. It is advisable to purchase food before the shops close if you plan to spend many hours at the airport.
Luggage and security
For a quieter and safer rest, the airport offers a luggage storage service on Level 0 that operates 24 hours a day, allowing you to store your bags securely. The terminal is equipped with security staff and CCTV surveillance, although cleaning crews and public address announcements are common and may interrupt sleep.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi: Internet access is free and unlimited, making it easier to stay entertained while waiting.
Power sockets: Power outlets are limited in public areas. It is advisable to check near columns or in designated laptop-use areas on the upper levels before the security checkpoint.
Booking accommodation
Hotels
Although there are no hotels located within the passenger terminal itself, the airport’s proximity to the town centre of Santa Cruz allows travellers to find a variety of accommodation options less than a 5-minute drive away. Many of these establishments offer transfer services upon request.
Nearby Accommodation
- Albatroz Beach & Yacht Club: The closest and most exclusive option, ideal for travellers seeking luxury, direct sea access and runway views less than one minute from the terminal.
- AL Moniz: Offers simple and functional accommodation, particularly convenient for budget-conscious travellers who need to stay overnight close to the airport.
- Albergaria O Professor: Located in the heart of Santa Cruz, allowing guests to enjoy the local atmosphere and regional cuisine during a short stopover or a final night stay.
- Residencial Santo António: An economical and family-friendly alternative, noted for its tranquillity and quick access to the check-in area.
- Santa Cruz Village Hotel: Combines modern facilities with an outdoor swimming pool, making it a comfortable choice for passengers wishing to relax before an international flight.
