Transportation

Galeão Airport offers several ground transportation options to connect with the main areas of Rio de Janeiro, including taxi services, ride-hailing apps, buses, and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which facilitates the connection to the Metro.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing Apps

Road transportation services are available in the arrivals areas of Terminal 2, with options varying in price and service type:

  • Regular Taxis: Available at Door A. Operated by companies such as Aerotáxi and Aerocoop.
  • Special Taxis: Offer prepaid fixed fares and are located at Door B. Companies include Cootramo, Coopatur, Coopertramo, Transcoopass, and Transcootur.
  • Ride-sharing (Uber/Apps): Pick-up and drop-off points for apps are generally located on the international departures level (Door D) and in designated areas within the domestic arrivals zone of Terminal 2.

Buses

Bus stops are located next to the arrivals halls of both terminals. Services include municipal and intermunicipal routes that connect the airport with various areas of the city and region.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)

The BRT system is the airport’s most efficient public transportation connection, operating two main lines:

  • TransCarioca Express (Semi-direct): Connects the airport with the Alvorada Terminal in Barra da Tijuca, with key stops such as the Fundão Terminal and the Vicente de Carvalho metro station.
  • TransCarioca (Conventional): Covers a longer route with stops at multiple stations and terminals along the way.

BRT buses depart from Door H at Terminal 1 and Door D at Terminal 2 and provide direct access to Rio’s metro system.

Expresso Gentileza (Intermodal Terminal)

Direct express service (Line Gentileza x Galeão) that links the airport with the Gentileza Intermodal Terminal (TIG) in the port area, with no intermediate stops. From there, you can connect to the VLT (Light Rail) toward downtown and Santos Dumont Airport.

Executive Buses ("Frescão")

Higher-comfort buses with air conditioning and luggage space. The most relevant line is 2918, which connects the airport with the South Zone and Barra da Tijuca, passing through key tourist areas.

Regular Urban Lines

There are conventional routes serving nearby neighborhoods and airport workers, such as 760D (to Charitas/Niterói) and 915 (Bonsucesso).

Metro

The airport does not have its own metro station, but it is accessible via BRT connections at stations such as Vicente de Carvalho and Jardim Oceânico.

  • Line 2: Connects Pavuna with Botafogo, passing through important areas such as Central do Brasil and Cinelândia.
  • Line 4: Runs from Jardim Oceânico to the South Zone, including neighborhoods like São Conrado and Leblon.

The metro operates Monday through Saturday from 5:00 am to 12:00 am, and on Sundays and holidays from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm.

Transportation Tips to/from the airport

Although there are issues that seem more than obvious, it is always advisable to take them into account when moving to or from the airport, and especially if we go by public transport.

1- To the airport - It is convenient to leave with a little more anticipation than what is commonly suggested. If you choose a taxi or a private car service, always take into account peak traffic times, demonstrations, strikes or events that may delay the journey to the airport from where you are. It is always good to be informed about what is happening.

If you contract a shared transfer service, have a contact telephone number handy in case of any delay by the company. In these cases they usually already have a scheduled collection time.

If you use public transport (collective, train) take into account the schedules (weekends and holidays tend to have less frequency), if you have to change and also how to board (if you need a card or paying the driver or motorist at the moment ). These are details that seem obvious, but it is advisable to know so as not to have surprises and suffer a delay that could cause complications.

If you rent a car to get to the airport, check where to leave the vehicle. At some airports, there is an exclusive parking lot for rental cars.

2 -From the airport- Here it is a little less stressful since you don't have the pressure of missing your flight. In the worst case, you will arrive later at the place where you are going to stay or at the meeting point where you are trying to arrive.

Once you leave the plane, look for your suitcase and finish with the arrival procedures that are required. Then, follow the directions for public transportation or ask the airport staff.

It is very useful to find out in advance the schedules of the buses or trains in case you arrive late at night. Not all work 24 hours. The same goes for taxis. In case of using an Uber-type service, have the mobile application handy to contact the driver.

On the other hand, if you booked a private transport service, it is likely that they will have a person waiting for you, identified with a sign. If you rent a car to go from the airport to your final destination, for greater peace of mind it is advisable to book it in advance. Rental counters are usually available in the arrivals hall.
