Overnight layover guide. Sleeping facilities in the public zone or boarding area
Please note that some published services and schedules may be subject to change. If the idea is to spend the night in the public area, consider a plan B in case the stay inside the airport is only allowed for those who are about to board.
Spending the night at the airport
Johannesburg Airport handles numerous flights and connections to destinations worldwide, so it’s common to see many passengers passing through late at night, waiting for their flights. There are many shops within the terminals, but most close around 11:00 pm.
Where to rest: The airport has plenty of seating, although most have armrests. However, padded benches without armrests can be found in some restaurants, the transit area, and the Departures level of Terminal B. There are several VIP lounges for those with a bigger budget, but most of them close at night. Only a couple of lounges in the international terminal remain open around the clock. Hotels can be found in front of Terminal A and above the P2 parking area, with additional options near the airport grounds.
Baggage: A left-luggage service is available in the basement of Terminal A, allowing you to store your bags while you rest.
Food and Drinks: Food options at the airport close at night.
Bathrooms: Showers are available only in some VIP lounges.
Wi-Fi: Free for 4 hours.
Other services available around the clock: ATMs, currency exchange offices, prayer rooms, medical clinic, baby care facilities.
