Malta Airport is known for being a safe, clean and relatively quiet place for passengers who need to wait for an early-morning flight or have an overnight layover. The terminal remains open 24 hours a day.

Where to rest

Although there are no dedicated sleeping cabins or rest areas, travellers usually settle in the following locations:

  • Level -1 (food court): This is the most popular area due to the presence of some padded seating in the cafés. However, it can be noisy because of cleaning equipment and refrigeration systems operating overnight.
  • Level 3: Security staff often direct overnight passengers to the upper floors, where the atmosphere is calmer and there is less foot traffic.
  • Airside (Departures): After passing through security, there are seats without armrests that allow you to lie down more comfortably, although access is only possible if check-in is already open or if you are travelling with hand luggage only.

Useful tips: The airport tends to maintain a low temperature due to air conditioning, so it is advisable to bring warm clothing or a blanket. Earplugs are also highly recommended due to public address announcements and overnight maintenance work.

Luggage

For a more restful sleep, you can use the luggage storage service available 24 hours a day in the Check-in Hall. This allows you to move around freely and keeps your belongings secure while you rest.

Food and Connectivity

  • Food: You will find 24-hour options, mainly in the arrivals area (such as Tat-Te) and in the food court, where coffee and snacks are available at any time.
  • Wi-Fi: The service is free and unlimited, making it easy to stay entertained or work while waiting. There are numerous charging points and power sockets, especially near seating areas on the upper level.

Security and 24-Hour Services

The airport has permanent security surveillance, making it a safe place for solo travellers. In addition to food outlets, you also have round-the-clock access to cash machines, baby care facilities and the Duty Free shop in the departures area.

Hotels

Although there are no hotels located directly within the terminal building, the airport’s position in the central-southern part of the island allows quick access to a range of accommodation options in the nearby towns of Luqa, Gudja and Kirkop, all within 5 to 10 minutes.

Nearby Accommodation

  • Squadron Base: This is the closest accommodation option to the terminal (just 500 metres away), making it ideal for travellers looking to rest after a late arrival or before an early-morning flight without relying on lengthy transfers.
  • The Suites - Piazza Kirkop: Offers modern rooms in a quiet, traditional setting, making it an excellent alternative for those who want to stay very close to the airport while enjoying the atmosphere of a Maltese village.
  • Traveller's Rest Gudja: Its strategic location in the village of Gudja allows extremely quick and direct access to the terminal, offering a traditional ambience and an on-site pub-restaurant.
  • Talbot & Bons Bed & Breakfast: This boutique property combines historic charm with high-end facilities, making it perfect for passengers who prioritise comfort and a personalised experience close to the airport.
  • Joseluce: Provides a warm and welcoming, home-like atmosphere, positioning itself as a practical and affordable option for short stays or technical stopovers in Malta.

Thanks to the island’s connectivity, many passengers also choose to stay in Valletta, Sliema or St Julian’s, areas located around 20–30 minutes away by taxi or private transport. Here you will find larger-scale accommodation options and international hotel chains.
